However, the headstrong Kate falls in love with the unknown journalist Mortimer (played by Linus Roache). A wealthy girl named Millie (played by Alison Elliott) appears in Kate's life; she is gravely ill and has little time left. Innocent Millie falls in love with Mortimer, and Kate watches everything unfold. A cunning plan emerges that could allow Kate to inherit Millie's fortune while winning Mortimer's love.
