This film is based on true events, with Nicolas Cage portraying Colonel Charles Butler McVay III. The ship was sunk by a Japanese submarine torpedo in July 1945 in the South Pacific, carrying two atomic bombs. About 300 of the 1,196 crew members went down with the ship, while the rest faced sun exposure, dehydration, saltwater erosion, and shark attacks while waiting for rescue. Only 317 were saved, and McVay was court-martialed, later exonerated half a century later.
