In 1930s Spain, a strange affliction spreads among children; those infected lack sweat glands, do not shed tears, and feel no pain. To prevent further harm, the authorities isolate the afflicted children in a convent, stripping them of their freedom. Imprisoned in a confined space, a boy named Benino (played by Ilias Stothart) is drawn to the singing next door, befriending a girl named Ines (played by Liah O'Prey) through a hole he dug. This group of unfortunate children must learn about "pain" in unique ways. In contemporary Spain, doctor David (played by Àlex Brendemühl) suffers a severe car accident on his way, resulting in the death of his wife, Anna (played by Irene Montalà), while their unborn child, just six months along, miraculously survives. Having temporarily evaded death, David later learns he has terminal lymphoma, with his life uncertain. To obtain a bone marrow transplant, David has to turn to his elderly parents, only to discover a long-hidden secret...
