The talented and idealistic young man Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) attends a prestigious prep school in Houston. Upon entering the elite school, Max dedicates all his effort to the clubs. With his exceptional intelligence, he quickly excels in various organizations. However, his neglect of academics results in the threat of expulsion. By chance, he becomes friends with the successful businessman Herman Bloom (Bill Murray) and learns many life truths. Yet, all of this comes to a halt at the hands of the brilliant teacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams). Max becomes deeply entangled in the world of love, unable to extricate himself. The film boasts sharp and witty dialogue filled with humor, along with the successful portrayal of characters by both new and veteran actors, receiving nominations for Best Supporting Actor at the 1999 Golden Globe Awards and winning multiple awards at the 1999 Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Director and Best Supporting Actor.
