Female student Valentine (Irène Jacob) is a part-time model with her boyfriend far away in England. Although she cherishes this relationship, she cannot prevent her boyfriend's suspicions about her. A retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant), who experienced a heart-wrenching love trauma in his youth, has lost faith in the world after the betrayal of his lover. His only pleasure comes from eavesdropping on his neighbors' phone calls, observing how people are filled with deceit. After meeting Valentine, his emotions that had been frozen for years begin to thaw. Law student Auguste (Jean-Pierre Lorit) has a bright future but must face infidelity in his relationship. He decides to go to England for a while to escape his painful feelings and encounters Valentine, who is also heading to England to find her boyfriend, on the ferry. The ship encounters severe convective weather, and after the storm, news reports of the shipwreck air on television. While over a hundred people perish, both Valentine and Auguste survive, feeling a sense of déjà vu with each other…
