Henry (Edmund Gwenn) and his daughter Sylvia (Katharine Hepburn) live a life dependent on each other. Forced by circumstances, Henry embezzles funds and is unable to repay his debts. After the truth is revealed, he and his daughter go into hiding and embark on a journey of escape. Along the way, to disguise her identity, Sylvia dresses as a man and takes the name Sylvester. During their escape, Henry and Sylvia meet a man named Jimmy (Cary Grant), who is also a con artist. The like-minded group forms a bond of companionship. Later, Tilt (Natalie Paley) joins them, and amusingly, despite being together day and night, none can see through Sylvia's disguise until an artist named Michael (Brian Aherne) appears.
