The entire story of "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" is a satire on the social mores of the Puritanical society: as the movement for cleanliness in the film industry is in full swing, even legally married couples are deprived of the right to share a bed, so why not make a film about a wife who refuses to consummate the marriage? This guarantees no risk of violating taboos. The wealthy male protagonist, who has a record of seven illustrious marriages, finally overcomes numerous obstacles to win the woman of his dreams. However, his suspicious eighth wife, although willing to marry him, believes he will never trust that her motivation for marrying into wealth is not money, so she insists on remaining virtuous until she is convinced of his genuine feelings for her, before fulfilling her wifely duties in bed. The scene of him taking his pants off is handled by other directors with dire consequences, but under the direction of Ernst Lubitsch, it becomes a dish full of color, aroma, and flavor—“superfluous” even becomes a mockery of the pitiable and laughable male protagonist.
