Liu Jinglun (played by Xia Yu), a young man fond of tinkering with new things, works at the Fengtai Photography Studio. By chance, he meets an Englishman, Raymond, who comes to Beijing to show moving pictures. The animated images on the screen fascinate him, leading Liu to secretly follow Raymond to shoot and exhibit these moving pictures, despite keeping it from his boss and family. The exhibition steals the thunder from the renowned performer "Tan Beile," who scoffs at these foreign amusements. During a palace visit to celebrate Empress Dowager Cixi's birthday, the projector accidentally explodes, resulting in Raymond being expelled from China. Disheartened, Liu returns to his job at the Fengtai Photography Studio. However, some film reels sent from England by Raymond, containing recordings of their initial street shootings capturing daily life in Beijing, reignite Liu's passion for moving pictures. Eventually, this leads to the creation of China's first film, "The Battle of Dingjunshan." The film is based on real historical events and recounts the birth of Chinese cinema. It won the Best Adapted Screenplay Award at the 37th Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.
