Professor Emil Jannings (played by Emil Jannings) teaches at a school with strict rules and a serious atmosphere, and his own personality mirrors this. He has always been rule-abiding and is particularly intolerant of his students' rebellious behavior. By chance, he learns that a group of his students plans to attend a cabaret show, and in a fit of rage, he decides to confront these unruly kids at the theater. What Professor Jannings doesn't expect is that this action will irrevocably change the course of his life. Laura (played by Marlene Dietrich) is the enchanting star of the theater, and nearly every man is helplessly enamored by her charms, including Professor Jannings. When he first sees Laura in the theater, he falls deeply in love with her. After much persistence in pursuing her, Laura finally becomes Jannings's bride, setting the tone for the tragedy that is to come due to their vastly different personalities and social statuses.
