An ugly old woman gives birth to a beautiful baby boy with an angelic face. However, the boy's sister (played by Julia Ormond) claims the child as her own. Once the absurd premise of a virgin giving birth is established, a series of unbelievable and mystical events follow, and the order of the entire world collapses. She first claims the baby is a holy child possessed by a god, then declares herself the Virgin Mary, profiting from the holy child. When the sister falls in love with the bishop's son (played by Ralph Fiennes), she is obstructed by the holy child, leading to the bishop's son meeting a tragic end beneath a bull's horns.
In retaliation, the sister kills the holy child, and the onlookers demand severe punishment for this woman who has violated divine law. She is sentenced to death, but as the law at the time stated that a virgin could not be executed, the pope orders 208 soldiers to rape her. The sister dies during the assault, and the people joyfully dismember the holy child, hoping to gain its protection.
