A hitman living in New Jersey, "Ghost Dog" (played by Forest Whitaker), is an African American deeply immersed in the spiritual world of Japanese samurai culture, with “loyalty” being his highest principle in life. He lives a secluded life, rarely speaking, and communicates with his boss through carrier pigeons. Ghost Dog regards his boss Louis (played by John Tormey) as a father figure and never hesitates to carry out orders, wielding his knife with brutal efficiency, resulting in bloodshed. He is lonely but does have friends he can confide in; during his free time, he chats with an African American who speaks French while buying ice cream in the park, engaging in their own conversations, which is amusing; or he exchanges insights on "Rashomon" with a book-loving young girl. Ghost Dog lives in his own world, but significant changes have occurred around him. Eventually, he is betrayed by Louis and becomes a victim of internal gang conflicts...
