The little man Afen (played by Hu Shufen) sounds like he has a woman's name. He quits his enviable civil servant job, leaves his girlfriend (played by He Lan), and comes to Beijing to carve out his future alone. Upon arriving in Beijing, Afen, who is completely alone and without support, ends up in such dire straits that he can't even afford a bowl of hot and sour noodles.
