During World War II, a farmer named Ma Dasan (played by Jiang Wen) lived a peaceful life under Japanese rule in Guajiatai Village, Hebei, China. One night, guerrillas kidnapped Japanese soldier Hanaya Kōzaburō (played by Kagawa Teruyuki) and the translator Dong Hancheng, binding them and stuffing them into sacks at Ma Dasan's home, instructing him to watch over them carefully until New Year's Eve when they would come for them. Ma Dasan and the villagers anxiously guarded the two, while Hanaya and Dong attempted to signal for help multiple times, all of which were thwarted by the villagers. Six months passed, and the villagers grew concerned about exposure but were afraid to release Hanaya and Dong. Ma Dasan was eventually persuaded by Dong to take Hanaya and Dong to the Japanese military police station in exchange for food. The military police officer Jizuka Inokichi was from the same hometown as Hanaya. He pretended to be polite to Ma and the others but secretly blamed Hanaya for bringing shame to the imperial army and physically assaulted him. The military police unit went to Ma's village to celebrate with the villagers and deliver food, but as the festivities intensified, a murderous intent suddenly emerged.
