The story takes place in Ireland during World War I. Rosie (played by Sarah Miles) is a cheerful and passionate girl who falls in love with a local school principal named Charles (played by Robert Mitchum). Despite their age difference, Rosie, like a moth to a flame, disregards everything and walks down the aisle with Charles. However, on their wedding night, a fierce argument erupts between them. It is only then that Rosie realizes that she and Charles are fundamentally incompatible, but it is too late. Later, Rosie meets Major Randolph (played by Christopher Jones), who ardently pursues her, and she falls in love once again. A series of unexpected events leads Rosie to become the target of the village's wrath, and the villagers imprison her, seeking to punish her as they believe she deserves.
