A 2016 Tokyo Film Festival Best Actress and Jury Award-winning film. It tells the coming-of-age story of a Sami girl named Ella Maya, who lives in the northern part of Scandinavia. The Sami people, also known as the Lapps, are a nomadic ethnic group living in northern Scandinavia. They have their own language (Sami) and unique folk music (Joik) as well as traditional clothing, living mainly by herding reindeer. For a long time, countries like Sweden and Norway attempted to assimilate the Sami through forced education and other means, and even officially prohibited the use of the Sami language in schools and public places.
