The story takes place in Reagan-era Ohio, focusing on seemingly ordinary high school girl Maren (played by Taylor Russell), who harbors a terrifying desire that is daunting to confront. After another incident, her father can no longer endure and quietly leaves her. Through a tape left by her father, Maren learns that her mother lives somewhere in Minnesota, and she might know the secret of her horrifying desires. On her journey, Maren encounters the strangely behaving old man Sully (played by Mark Rylance), who keenly senses that they share a similarity—both are cannibals who can only survive in the darkness. The girl rejects the old man's invitation and chooses to escape, soon encountering another similar person, Lee (played by Timothée Chalamet), which changes the course of their lives... This film is based on the novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis.
