It is quite common for fans to idolize star players, but it can easily spiral out of control when taken too far. The male lead of this film, Gil Renard, is a knife salesman who idolizes African American baseball player Bobby Rayburn. As Bobby's sports career reaches its peak, Gil finds himself at the lowest point of his life, facing both divorce and unemployment. Therefore, he completely invests his purpose for living into Bobby, going so far as to intimidate, kill, and even kidnap Bobby's son to threaten him into hitting home runs, causing a sensational outburst at the ballpark. Behind the Scenes The film uses dramatic techniques to portray the distorted psychology of fans, resulting in a striking effect. However, the deliberate crafting of the imagery feels somewhat superficial, preventing its impact from fully resonating. In 1981, there was a film of the same name about an obsessed fan madly pursuing a Broadway star, starring Lauren Bacall.
