The film is adapted from Susan Scarf Merrell's novel, set in the 1960s, telling the story of a young couple (portrayed by Lerman and Yang) who move in with American Gothic thriller novelist Shirley Jackson (played by Moss) and her husband (played by Stuhlbarg). They become involved in a psychological thriller event, which also provides material for Jackson's next novel.
