Two girls with sharply contrasting personalities and completely different backgrounds unexpectedly meet at a resort beach in Atlantic City when they are eleven years old, leading to a three-year friendship. Bette Midler is a working-class New York Jew, enthusiastic and self-assured, who dreams of making it big in the entertainment industry. Barbara, on the other hand, is a socialite from San Francisco, smart, beautiful, and wealthy, but she has also faced numerous setbacks in love and marriage. Through their correspondence, they share each other's joys and sorrows, building a bond deeper than that of biological sisters. However, one day their friendship is put to the test.
