Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp) is a disillusioned writer from New York who arrives in Puerto Rico to work as a journalist for a struggling newspaper, living a life of excess and debauchery. He encounters the stunningly beautiful Chenault (Amber Heard) at a hotel and is immediately attracted to her. Real estate mogul Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart) hires Kemp to write advertisements and provides him with abundant money and material possessions. Kemp discovers that Chenault is actually Sanderson's woman, yet he cannot help but fall for her. Sanderson arranges for Kemp to accompany Chenault, but Kemp resists the temptation of her beauty and refuses to elope with her. They visit an island to inspect properties, and at a party, a drunken Chenault dances passionately with a local man, infuriating Sanderson. The next day, Sanderson announces the termination of his collaboration with Kemp and kicks Chenault out of his house. Kemp takes Chenault in and is determined to expose the dark dealings of Sanderson's real estate transactions, but the publisher refuses to print his story. He and his friend make a big sum of money off chicken fights at a fair, but when they return to print their manuscript, they discover that the publisher has already been auctioned off, leaving them with nothing. Kemp does not give up on his pursuit. Back in New York, he successfully exposes Sanderson, becomes a journalist, and lives happily with Chenault.
