The story takes place in 19th-century England, where Mary (Kate Winslet) is a paleontologist. However, this profession does not provide her with a comfortable living, and Mary continues to struggle on the poverty line. To pay for her sick mother's treatment, she survives by collecting fossils on the beach and selling them to tourists. One day, a man named Roderick (James McArdle) approaches Mary with a generous offer, hoping she can care for his ailing wife Charlotte (Saoirse Ronan). Tempted by the financial incentive, Mary agrees. However, shortly after meeting Charlotte, the vast differences in their ideologies spark conflict. As time goes by, they both see a world in each other that they have never experienced.
