The story takes place in the summer of 1988, where Elvin (played by Paul Rudd) and Lance (played by Emile Hirsch) are both colleagues and each other's only companion. Their work is simple and monotonous: painting road signs for what seems to be an endless highway. Lance, accustomed to a lively lifestyle filled with bright lights and parties, feels utterly frustrated transitioning to the quiet wilderness. In contrast, Elvin finds inspiration in the serene environment and focused work. Every day, he writes a passionate letter to his girlfriend who is far away, and she happens to be Lance's sister. Amid loneliness and solitude, the two men frequently bicker, but these conflicts bring vitality and motivation to their daily lives and work.
