In a remote town in Nova Scotia, Canada, lives the fate-stricken woman Maud (Sally Hawkins), who contracted polio in her childhood. After recovering, she was left with arthritis, which forced her to walk with a limp and subjected her to discrimination. After her parents died, she lived with her aunt but felt no warmth from her relatives. By chance, she saw a job advertisement for a housemaid; although it only paid a meager 1 dollar a month, she hoped to escape her stifling aunt's home. The man who hires her is Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke), an eccentric and reserved man with a volatile temper. Initially, Maud faces harsh criticism and even abuse, but she seems determined to stay in this new place, working hard to clean the house and using her free time to paint beautiful patterns on the walls. One day, Maud's talent is finally discovered… This film is based on a true story.
