Eight swimmers in a monochromatic setting make waves in a similarly monochromatic school pool. A pair of half-brothers, the elder Zack is the school’s top dog, well-connected and admired by girls, often commanding his younger brother Darren to complete his chemistry assignments for him. The younger brother is a typical computer nerd, constantly immersed in online games and hacking, and though he may be labeled a "shut-in" for his messy hair, large black-framed glasses, and unkempt clothing, he is actually a less skilled swimmer and part of the school swimming team led by his brother. A boy who relishes sunlight and water while being computer-savvy could be seen as well-rounded; he lacks his brother's cunning—“bad boys” are often favored by girls. The younger brother's clumsiness and sincerity are not what his female classmates prefer, but he has found someone he admires. Xandrie's silky blonde hair and innocent smile captivate Darren, but at the wild party thrown by his brother, he cannot find the blonde girl in blue. He sends text messages in a language only the young online crowd understands but cannot locate her on the room's surveillance. When he encounters a group of guys and girls getting drunk and high in a computer nerd’s room, he worries about Xandrie possibly being drugged and taken to an isolated location for abuse, fearing she might suffer the same fate. He drives them away, a subconscious reaction against those who exploit alcohol and illicit substances to gain courage, numbing common sense and indulging in actions that could lead to disastrous consequences. The eight competitors in the monochromatic swimming contest are not just swimmers; the remaining four are prominent figures in school bullying.
