Angela (played by Janet Gaynor) has a mother who is seriously ill and urgently needs medication for treatment. Living in poverty, Angela is left with no choice but to steal to save her mother, and her actions naturally lead to a police manhunt. Thus, Angela embarks on a journey of escape. On her journey, Angela arrives at a circus, where she hides her identity and becomes one of the performers, which helps her evade the police. At the circus, she meets a young painter named Kino (played by Charles Farrell). Although Kino is talented, he remains an unknown artist. Angela's presence inspires him and helps him achieve success in his career. The two fall in love and decide to get married, but just as the wedding is about to take place, the police discover Angela's whereabouts.
