The story takes place in the early 1930s, where Lillian (played by Jane Fonda) travels to Vienna to search for her former friend Julia (played by Vanessa Redgrave). Upon arriving, Lillian discovers that Julia has been injured and hospitalized due to a violent confrontation with fascist supporters, and is now missing. After returning to her own life, Lillian unexpectedly receives a letter from Julia, in which Julia asks Lillian to help her transfer fifty thousand dollars to an anti-Nazi organization. Despite the enormous danger this action entails, Lillian agrees to help Julia, and the two long-lost friends reunite in Berlin. However, not long after, Lillian receives the news of Julia's death, and in her grief, Lillian realizes that she has unfinished business.
