The highest-grossing domestic film in Bulgarian history. In recent years, Bulgarian films such as "The Shallow Black" and "Under the Bulgarian Sky" have won awards at the Moscow and Tokyo Film Festivals, and domestically, people have finally seen a comedy that can rival Hollywood. Directed by Dimitar Mitovski, "Mission: London" was released locally on April 16 and sold 140,000 tickets in ten days, breaking the record set by "Avatar." So far, it has attracted 350,000 viewers, making it the highest-grossing domestic film in Bulgarian history. The film's screenplay is based on a novel by Alek Popov. The story takes place in the Bulgarian embassy in London, where officials fill their time engaging in petty trades, exchanging cigarettes and alcohol with the local Bulgarian diaspora using diplomatic privileges. However, after Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007, the situation changed dramatically, as the president's wife hoped to invite Queen Elizabeth to a celebratory dinner, leading to the appointment of a new ambassador, Valentin. Set against a backdrop of music from David Bowie, Blur, and the Sex Pistols, this film is arguably the most internationally resonant Bulgarian film to date. The cast includes Alan Ford, Ralf Brown, and Georgi Staykov, who appeared in the Swedish film series "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." The latter plays a character nearly identical to his real-life persona—a Bulgarian version of Robert De Niro. The film features many public figures from Bulgaria, including musicians and politicians; however, Director Mitovski and screenwriter Popov ensured that it did not devolve into mere parody. The film is filled with witty dialogue and maintains a tight rhythm throughout, allowing it to become a comedy that transcends borders. Furthermore, from a technical standpoint—including cinematography and editing—the €1.5 million "Mission: London" is the most sophisticated film produced in Bulgaria to date. It has received acclaim domestically and is considered a strong contender for Bulgaria's submission for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film this year.
