At the turn of the century, ancient China is undergoing unprecedented transformations. The aging Qing Dynasty is on the brink of collapse, and the blood of the Six Gentlemen cannot halt the wheels of history. The skies over old Beijing are turbulent and unpredictable. Wang Lifafa (played by Yu Shizhi) is the young manager of the Yutai Teahouse in Beijing. He remembers his father's teachings, receiving guests from all directions with grace and attentiveness. In this small teahouse, various people from all walks of life come and go: Uncle Song (played by Huang Zongluo), who sighs over his trapped bird; the resolute Manchu Chang Siye (played by Zheng Rong), lamenting the nation's imminent demise; Qin Zhongyi (played by Lan Tianye), who is dedicated to saving the country through industry; Liu Mazi (played by Ying Ruocheng), who engages in inhumane human trafficking; and the eunuch Pang (played by Tong Chao), who plans to marry… As one performance concludes, another begins, showcasing the world’s woes and sorrows within this small teahouse… This film is adapted from the original work by Lao She and won a special award at the 3rd China Film Golden Rooster Awards in 1983, as well as a special award from the Ministry of Culture in 1982 for outstanding films.
