In the remote, impoverished, and forgotten town of Vial del Rio in Spain, one day a government official suddenly arrived, announcing that the Marshall Aid team would soon be reaching the town and that locals should prepare to receive the American delegation accordingly. The news spread, causing a stir throughout the town. People from all walks of life and various factions started dreaming of gold, hoping to receive what they wanted from the Americans. However, the Americans never came to the town, and people's fantasies and hopes evaporated. Soon, Vial del Rio returned to its former state of poverty and neglect. The film satirizes the social phenomena and the deceit of so-called "American aid" in Spain at that time with a sharp tone. It won the Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival (1953), elevating Berlanga to the status of an internationally renowned director and paving the way for foreign audiences to understand Spanish cinema, thereby promoting the development of the Spanish film industry.
