In Madrid, Spain during Franco's regime, young girl Ana (played by Ana Torrent) is taken in by her aunt after the death of her officer father, Anselmo. Anselmo was known for his womanizing ways, and her mother María (played by Geraldine Chaplin) sacrificed her career for him, ultimately leading to her own painful and lonely life before passing away. Memories of her mother occasionally surface in Ana’s mind, blending with her own fantasies about death, gradually affecting her reality. The three sisters, under their aunt’s care, are restless; their aunt is embroiled in a love affair with one of Anselmo's married comrades, and Ana's behavior increasingly threatens her. Ana attempts to use a bottle of supposed poison to help her bedridden grandmother commit suicide, but the bottle contains only soda. When her grandmother refuses the poison, Ana shifts her target to her aunt... This film won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976 among other accolades.
