The story begins in the early 16th century when Queen Catherine (Binnie Barnes) is unable to bear children, leading King Henry VIII (Charles Laughton) to divorce her and marry a woman named Anne (Merle Oberon) as his new queen. However, ambitious Anne constantly schemes to overthrow her husband and claim the throne for herself. When her plot is revealed, Henry VIII personally sends her to the guillotine. After Anne's death, Henry VIII marries Jane (Wendy Barrie), but she dies during childbirth due to complications, leaving behind a poor infant named Wells (Miles Mander). Subsequently, the ministers hope for the king to marry a German princess, but this time, the king rejects their request.
