A young writer from the American South, Stingo (played by Peter MacNicol), comes to Brooklyn to make a living and meets Sophie (played by Meryl Streep) and Nathan (played by Kevin Kline), who live upstairs. They eagerly express their desire to befriend the young writer, and Stingo gladly accepts their invitation. As they gradually get to know each other, they develop a close and friendly relationship. During this process, Stingo learns that Sophie often cries due to Nathan's jealousy and rage, but she loves Nathan deeply. What worries her the most is that life without Nathan is unimaginable. Sophie is Polish and came to America after World War II, where she met Nathan and depended on him. During the war, Sophie was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp, and her father, husband, and children all perished in this war. How will Sophie choose between her suffering, the tragic fate of her loved ones, and the hellish genocide of this war…
