On the Suzhou River in Shanghai, Ma Da (Jia Hongsheng), who delivers goods on a motorcycle, takes on the job of delivering the innocent girl, Mu Dan (Zhou Xun). During their time together, Mu Dan falls in love with Ma Da, but just as she decides to entrust her life to him, Ma Da, blinded by greed, conspires with his gang friends to kidnap her, causing Mu Dan to lose heart and jump into the Suzhou River. Before jumping, Mu Dan leaves behind a message that she will become a mermaid to find Ma Da again. Five years later, Ma Da, filled with regret for his actions, is puzzled when Mu Dan returns and begins to search for her.
