The story takes place in the desolate American West, in the town of Appaloosa, where Everett (Viggo Mortensen) and his partner Virgil (Ed Harris) struggle to maintain a fragile peace in the town through force and firearms. The most powerful figure in the town is rancher Randall (Jeremy Irons), who, due to his vast resources, has effectively become a bully along with his gang.
