On October 1, 1954, a rebellion against French rule erupted in Algeria, centered in the Casbah of Algiers, the capital of French Algeria. This was fueled by the Arab resentment toward the long-standing French domination. Destruction occurred everywhere, and when the French government realized the seriousness of the situation, they deployed General Massu with a force of 400,000 soldiers to the area of Algiers on October 7, 1957. However, the riots continued to escalate, and French suppression efforts intensified.
