This film is divided into two parts, telling the story of a beautiful woman named Hu Yuyin (Liu Xiaoqing), known as "Sister Furong," in Furong Town, located at the junction of Hunan, Guangdong, and Guangxi provinces, and her experiences during the "Four Cleanups Movement" and the "Cultural Revolution." In 1963, thanks to her enthusiastic and thoughtful service, Hu Yuyin and her husband Gui Gui (Liu Linian) gradually became the most vibrant sight at the morning market with their rice tofu stall. Additionally, the couple lived frugally, accumulating a considerable amount of wealth. The town's Party secretary and Hu Yuyin's elder brother Li Mangen (Zhang Guangbei), the grain station director Gu Yanshan (Zheng Zaishi), and the neighbors were all happy for them. As they were building a new house and preparing for a better life, they were faced with the "Four Cleanups Movement." Jealous of Hu Yuyin, former state-run restaurant manager and now the county commercial bureau chief Li Guoxiang (Xu Songzi) and the good-for-nothing Wang Qiushé (Zhu Shibin) conspired to label her as “a rich farmer” among the “counter-revolutionary five categories,” sending her to sweep the streets alongside the former county cultural center director, known as “Qin the Madman,” a "rightist" Qin Shutian (Jiang Wen). Gui Gui passed away. During the movement, Li Mangen betrayed Hu Yuyin, while Gu Yanshan remained honest, adhering to the standards of old revolutionary soldiers. In 1966, with the start of the "Cultural Revolution," the absurdity of the times could be seen in the role-swapping actions of Li Guoxiang and Wang Qiushé. While sweeping the streets together, Hu Yuyin blamed her tragic fate on Qin Shutian, who had sung a song deemed counter-revolutionary as a congratulation when she married Gui Gui and had written another believed to be counter-revolutionary congratulatory couplet when her new house was completed. Qin Shutian did not argue much against Hu Yuyin's resentment, but instead often secretly helped her. Gradually, the two developed feelings for each other and planned to live a good life as a family, but the road ahead was fraught with blood and conflict. During their most difficult times, Gu Yanshan never forgot to lend a hand.
