A mysterious ancient Chinese scroll contains immense power, and evil villains are eager to obtain it to rule the world. An unnamed monk from Tibet, China (played by Chow Yun-fat), has been leading a wandering life to protect the scroll, evading danger in nearly every corner of the world. One day, the monk feels exhausted and begins to search for a suitable person to become his disciple and carry on this arduous task. A street punk named Carl (played by Seann William Scott) inadvertently helps the monk out of a jam, and perhaps through a spiritual connection, the monk senses that this troublemaker is his successor, deciding to pass on his martial arts skills to Carl. Carl embarks on his difficult destiny to fight against evil.
