This movie depicts one of the most brutal wars in human history: the Battle of Thermopylae. In 480 BC, Persian King Xerxes I (played by Rodrigo Santoro) led an army of 300,000 to invade Greece. The city-states of Greece quickly dispatched troops to form a coalition, preparing to fend off the Persian invasion. The frontline of defense was established at Thermopylae in Greece, where King Leonidas of Sparta (played by Gerard Butler) commanded 300 elite soldiers alongside over 4,000 coalition troops. Due to the betrayal of a traitor, the Greek forces found themselves surrounded by the Persian army from behind. To preserve the strength of the coalition, Leonidas ordered the coalition forces to retreat first while he and his 300 Spartans held their ground at Thermopylae. Hundreds of thousands of Persian soldiers surged in, and knowing they would inevitably die, the Spartan soldiers demonstrated incredible morale and combat strength. The entire battle lasted for two days, ultimately resulting in the death of Leonidas and his 300 soldiers, while the Persian army suffered over 20,000 casualties, including two brothers of Xerxes I who perished in this battle...
