High school girl Shin-chun (played by Kim So-hye) from a single-parent family lives a mundane life with her mother Yoon-hee (played by Kim Hee-ae). One day, Shin-chun receives a letter addressed to her mother and, for some reason, opens it to find it’s from a woman named Junko in Otaru, Hokkaido. The letter’s ambiguous words lead Shin-chun to question the relationship between her mother and Junko. She asks her uncle and father about it, but the elders remain tight-lipped, as if hiding something. After this, Shin-chun returns the letter to the mailbox, waiting for her mother to pick it up. Yoon-hee reads the letter and feels a storm of emotions inside, while maintaining a facade of calm; she has sacrificed too much for this past. One night, Shin-chun tells Yoon-hee about her graduation trip plans, expressing her desire to travel to Otaru, Hokkaido, and wants her mother to accompany her.
Distant Otaru, a place that haunts their dreams, where two women have been separated by the sea for twenty years...
