Andre (Pietro Germi) is a train driver with a rigid personality and a fiery temper, often losing his cool with his wife Julia (Sylva Koscina) and showing a harsh demeanor towards his daughter Sara (Luisa Della Noce). Eventually, Julia can no longer tolerate Andre's temper and leaves home with their daughter. Afterwards, Andre has a fierce dispute with his colleagues at work. In a fit of anger, he quits his job and begins living as a homeless person on the streets. This indulgent lifestyle severely damages Andre's health. Although in the end, his wife and child return to him, and he reconciles with his colleagues, there is little time left for Andre.
