Sonia (played by Renée Zellweger) is a lively girl full of quirky thoughts. Fate brings her together with a man named Mendel (played by Glenn Fitzgerald), and they fall in love at first sight, quickly embarking on the path to marriage. Mendel is a devout Jew, and everything in his life follows God's will. Soon, Sonia realizes that what Mendel needs is merely a "wife" as defined by traditional views, rather than the real person she is. As time goes by, the distance between Sonia and Mendel grows, and a jewelry store employee named Raymond (played by Allen Payne) comes closer to Sonia, leading them both to inevitably fall in love.
