A heartfelt journey spanning 50 years through time. The suffering and love-hate between two women are both heartbreaking and intoxicating. Modern woman Ah Hui (played by Li Qihong) returns from studying architecture in the United States to run her career between Hong Kong and the mainland, embodying a new era of female empowerment. Her boyfriend (played by Zhao Wenxuan), who is also her subordinate, finds their feelings growing distant as he becomes infatuated with another woman. Ah Hui is heartbroken yet lacks options. Ah Hui's father entrusts her to accompany her childhood nanny, Huan Gu (played by Gui Yazhen), back to her hometown to visit old friends. The two clash upon meeting, and their interactions are less than pleasant. As the journey progresses, their conflicts continue but they also gradually come to an understanding. Huan Gu shares a hidden past while guiding the emotionally fragile Ah Hui. In the 1940s in Shunde, Guangdong, women still live under the chains of patriarchy. The young Yihuan (played by Yang Caini) is sold by her father to a landlord; she would rather become a self-combed woman than submit. She is rescued by a courtesan, Yuhuan (played by Liu Jialing), who happens to pass by. Yuhuan marries the local cloth factory owner, Chen Yaozong (played by Dong Wei), as his eighth concubine, and constantly engages in struggles with the other wives, while forming a deep bond with Yihuan, where they share everything. Yihuan is in love with her childhood sweetheart (played by Qian Jiale), but their love cannot lead to marriage. Yuhuan is betrayed by her husband and becomes a pawn in the warlords' business dealings; in her anger, she leaves the Chen family. Yihuan's unwavering support deeply moves Yuhuan, and their feelings gradually transcend friendship. However, on the night of "buying the threshold," Yihuan cheats on her lover, leading Yuhuan to a mix of worry and anger, ultimately revealing her innermost secret to Yihuan. Can lovers ultimately be united? What secrets lie between these two women? Will Ah Hui be able to overcome her emotional struggles? And who has Huan Gu been searching for over the past 50 years? "Self-Combed," a masterpiece by renowned director Zhang Zhilang, is simple yet profoundly moving, with deep character portrayals and sensitivity to the era, making it the best work in Chinese lesbian cinema.
