Ming Dynasty story: The late daughter of the Taiyuan garrison, Chen Xiuying, and her mother open a teahouse to make a living. Her father left behind an iron bow with the last wish that whoever can draw the bow may marry his daughter. The son of the Taiyuan governor, Shi Xulong, wants to marry Xiuying but is beaten and chased away by Chen's mother. Chen's mother orchestrates a plan, meets General Kuang Zhong from the Shi army for advice, and returns to the teahouse. Xiuying falls in love with Kuang, who can also draw the bow, and they compete in martial arts to marry. Shi Xulong and his son conspire to have Kuang's father and son disarmed, while secretly bribing guards to capture them. As a result, Kuang's father and son are sent to Yunnan. Shi's son then pressures Xiuying, who pretends to agree to the marriage, kills him, and escapes with her mother, seeking refuge with her friend Wang Fuzhang. Unexpectedly, Fuzhang arrives just as Kuang is captured by Shi's men, but Governor Wang knows of the injustice and pardons them. Xiuying disguises herself as a man, taking Fuzhang's name, and on the road meets Guanshi's daughter Cui'e, promising marriage. Xiuying feigns a three-agreement and prepares for the ceremony, assuming military command. They raise an army to attack Taiyuan and kill Shi Xulong for revenge. Governor Wang orders Fuzhang to battle, but the true and false Fuzhang fight to a standstill, and Wang recalls Kuang's father and son, reuniting Kuang and Xiuying as husband and wife.
