Władysław Szpilman (played by Adrien Brody) is a pianist at a radio station in Poland. As World War II is about to break out, his entire family is forced into the Jewish ghetto in Warsaw. Amidst the turmoil of war, his family and relatives are ultimately killed by the Nazis, and Szpilman himself endures various humiliations and torments. He narrowly finds temporary refuge with the help of a friend. As the war intensifies, his friend must leave him to return home in search of a safe place to care for his children. At this time, Szpilman is severely ill but must still flee during the manhunt. In the attic of ruins, he encounters a German officer, who, at his request, hears him play the piano. The beautiful music evokes compassion in the German officer, who secretly helps Szpilman until the liberation of Poland by Soviet forces arrives... The film is adapted from the autobiographical novel "Death City" by Polish pianist Władysław Szpilman.
