Other main actors: William Holden Michael Caine Sophia Loren Keir Dullea James Hayter Colin Gordon Bryan Forbes Oscar Homolka Trevor Howard This film, shot in 1958 in the UK, uses black and white film to convey a special sense of nostalgia. During World War II, German submarines launched large-scale attacks on Allied transport ships, aiming to prevent U.S. resources from reaching the UK, which would lead to a scarcity of internal supplies. The protagonist is the captain of a transport ship requisitioned by the Allies; his mission is to rescue the crew of ships destroyed by German submarines in international waters. Although simple, this is a very dangerous job. The protagonist's dormitory is also home to his former colleague, and his wife lives there as well. (Aside: During the war, many soldiers' wives and girlfriends, after losing their husbands or partners, tend to decline and become sexual objects. This was especially prominent in Europe during World War II, but it has never been properly acknowledged by history.) The plot may be cliché, with the two characters falling in love and ultimately separating at the end, but the ending implies that they will eventually be together. ~
