Scottish single mother Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter) has stopped speaking since she was six, expressing her emotions solely through the piano. In 1852, McGrath marries Stewart (Sam Neill) and brings her piano to New Zealand. However, Stewart lacks the resources and ends up abandoning the heavy piano on the beach. Stewart's friend George Baines (Harvey Keitel) falls in love with McGrath and offers eighty acres of land to Stewart in exchange for the piano. Stewart relinquishes the piano and instructs McGrath to teach Baines how to play. During the piano lessons, Baines suggests that if McGrath allows certain indiscretions to occur while teaching, he will trade a piano key for each session...
