Without a doubt, what makes Nate (Christopher Walken) most proud is his exceptional ability to save money. "You can get by on five dollars a day" is a motto he often cites. What deeply concerns Nate is his relationship with his son Flynn (Alessandro Nivola), which has "dropped to below freezing" and can hardly be described in any other way. An unexpected illness leads Nate to think about reconciling with Flynn, and coincidentally, Flynn is also going through a low point in his life. Thus, these two troubled men set off in a beat-up car on a quest for medical help. Along the way, Nate fully implements his life principle—save whenever possible—which Flynn finds unbearable. However, amid a series of conflicts and misunderstandings, the relationship between father and son begins to warm up.
