Sal (Sam Riley) is a young writer in search of inspiration and eager to wander, while Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund) is a charming and reckless youth with a history of incarceration, who has married the free-spirited 16-year-old Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Sal is captivated by Dean's passionate lifestyle, and Dean admires Sal's elegance and knowledge. The three young people, all yearning for freedom, soon decide to abandon their lives and travel the road together. They hitchhike, smoke marijuana, sing while on the move, and reflect when intoxicated. On the highways across America, they indulge in hedonism, search for themselves, and burn with youth. The film is adapted from the autobiographical novel of the same name by American writer Jack Kerouac, which is regarded as the bible of the "beat generation."
