In 1936, the Red Army marched through the Tibetan areas along the Jinsha River, where the Kuomintang colluded with the local warlord Qiu Wanli, attempting to obstruct the Red Army's crossing of the river to the north. Qiu Wanli sent his henchmen to impersonate the Red Army and abduct the only daughter of the local chieftain, Sangge, named Zhuma, to sow discord between the chieftain and the Red Army. The Red Army adhered to the Party's ethnic policy, rescued Zhuma, crossed the Jinsha River, and advanced to the border of the Tibetan region. Qiu, fearing the Red Army, infiltrated the Tibetan area first. He claimed that Zhuma had been killed by the Red Army and provided ammunition and weapons for the chieftain to fight against them. To expose the enemy's lies, Red Army instructor Jin Ming took a squad to escort Zhuma back home. However, a soldier sent to deliver a message to the chieftain was killed by the enemy. In a critical moment, Jin Ming took the risk to negotiate with the chieftain on the mountain. The chieftain, suspecting both sides, sent a trusted aide to verify the situation. Unfortunately, the messenger was again ambushed by Qiu Wanli and arrived at the Red Army's camp injured, explaining the situation. Incited by Qiu Wanli, the chieftain was about to kill the hostage Jin Ming when Zhuma and the Red Army arrived, exposing the enemy. Qiu Wanli fled in panic and fell into the Jinsha River, where he drowned. The Red Army cleared the way and continued to march northward.
