Mechanic Frank (played by Jack Nicholson) is penniless and taken in by a Greek store owner named Nick in a nearby town of Los Angeles. Nick's young wife, Cora (played by Jessica Lange), sparks Frank's strong interest. Cora, also tired of her alcoholic Greek husband, quickly engages in an affair with Frank while Nick is away in town and they decide to elope. However, Frank's gambling addiction forces a change in their plan. Cora initially intends to kill the drunken Nick but only manages to seriously injure him. After Nick is discharged from the hospital, Cora and Frank devise another plan and finally succeed. The insurance company, unwilling to compensate for Nick's accidental death, orchestrates efforts to prove Cora and Frank's guilt. Fortunately, a lawyer cleverly exploits the conflicting interests between different insurance companies to exonerate them. Although Frank and Cora scheme against each other in prison, they eventually come together. Their life after taking over the store is mundane until one day a man shows up to blackmail them... This film is the fourth cinematic adaptation of James Cain's original novel.
